Camphone patent problems for LG in Europe [Fri May 11, 05:59PM]

As it turns out, LG has been convicted by a Dutch court in The Hague for patent infringement. The Korean cell phone maker apparently uses a jpeg compression technology in it's camphones that has been patented by Philips.

The judge has ordered LG to cut a deal with Philips or else LG could be summoned to pull all its camphones, like the Chocolate, Shine and upcoming Prada, from the Dutch market untill September when the patent expires. If LG doesn't comply with the ruling ti could be fined up tot 10.000 Euro for every camphone it sells.

The Netherlands is the only country where Philips went to court for this but the patent is also valid in other European countries like Austria, Italy and Sweden.

Both Philips and LG acknowledged the fact that there is some legal trouble between the two companies regarding patent infringement but both inclined to comment when asked.
