GSMA cautions against further roaming regulation [Wed Feb 13, 01:31PM]

GSMA Chief Government and Regulatory Affairs Officer Tom Phillips yesterday cautioned against the need for further regulation of prices for data roaming.

The statement came in response to new proposals from the European Commissioner for Information Society and Media, Viviane Reding, who said regulation was a possibility if the mobile industry does not reduce prices to what she describes as “adequate levels” by 1 July this year.

“We don’t feel that price regulation is beneficial,” said Phillips. “We feel the way to influence prices is to allow for innovation. We argue that voice roaming is a competitive market, while data roaming is clearly at a different stage of its development.”
