The competition was devised after the most extensive market research programme ever undertaken into the consumer market for mobile computing, which was published by the GSMA and Microsoft last year.
The research revealed that a US$50 billion opportunity –which equates to around 70million units – was being missed. The competition was originally looking for notebooks under US$1,000; the two winners offered products costing less than US$800.
